Can Someone Explain MySpace to Me?

MySpaceI don’t mean in the literal sense of things… I know what it is and I even have an account.  What I don’t fully understand is the whole why of it.  Perhaps someone could shed some light on this for me?

I created my account so that I could communicate with my family.  They all have MySpace accounts and spend their Internet time there instead of places like my blog.  (Go figure!) Since I wanted to send them email and I couldn’t find a way to send them mail to their MySpace account short of going into MySpace to do it I had no choice but to create an account.

The first couple of days after having my account I was literally innundated with 20 or 30 emails a day from total strangers wanting to be my “friend”.   Again, I just don’t get it.  I think “friend” must mean something different to me than it does on MySpace.  I quickly learned how to make changes to my profile to help keep my inbox at a somewhat sane level.  I can’t say I know much else about my profile other than I was told I needed to give myself a background and upload a picture.  Both of which I did after much trial and error.

What I once thought was a teenage social website seems to be a lot more than that… well at least the teen part is not necessarily true. I’m certainly not a teen and my mother who is now on the right side of 60 years old is quite happy with her “page”.   A key thing for her for sure is that it is all cut and paste and it does give her an opportunity to socialize with others on a regular basis.

My family continues to use MySpace to communicate via email, and I enjoy getting their “decorations” (ie. comments) of my ”page”.  I don’t however think that I will be spending too much time or energy trying to learn a new web application or searching for “decorations” that I can use to adorn the pages of my other MySpace “friends”.

I guess when compared to other Internet activities MySpace is really not that different.  I choose to spend my time working and communicating on this blog, others choose to use MySpace.   I guess with millions of users I should be so lucky.  Hmm… maybe I need to figure out how to get a bunch of MySpace friends that will also take a peek at my blog…  If you know how to do that let me know and I will tune my family into it.
